About Mount Zion
Welcome to Mount Zion Baptist Church Spartanburg! We are located on Mount Zion Road in Spartanburg, SC just around the corner from Fairforest Elementary School. Our church family is made up of warm, friendly, caring followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Our mission is simple..."Knowing Christ, and making Him known." Through all of our ministries and programs, it is our goal to bring believers into a closer relationship with Christ and to bring people who do not know Christ into a new relationship with Him.
Mount Zion Baptist Church Spartanburg had its beginning as a church mission start of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Moore, SC. It began as a mission in 1804 under the direction of the Rev. Thomas Bomar. The church continued as a mission church until it was constituted on June 2, 1827. The original charter members consisted of 9 males and 33 females. The first sanctuary was constructed in 1832 on land that was donated by John Chapman, Sr. In 1901, a Gothic style building replaced the original church. When that building became structurally unsound, the present sanctuary was built in 1975. As the church continued to grow, additional educational space was needed. In 1986, a new education and fellowship addition was built.
Mount Zion Baptist Church was of great influence and resource in the formation of First Baptist Church Spartanburg, First Baptist North Spartanburg (formerly New Pisgah), Oak Grove Baptist Church, and Fairforest Baptist Church, including the sending of church members to these churches as Charter Members. The Mount Zion Cemetery is one of the oldest in the upstate and claims the graves of five Revolutionary War patriots, 28 documentable Confederate soldiers, two soldiers from the War of 1812, and one from the Spanish-American War. The cemetery was designated a South Carolina Historical Site on May 5, 2002.
The present focus of the church is reaching the lost and unchurched in our community with the Gospel message of the Lord, Jesus Christ through our various outreach programs and ministries of the church. We are also focused upon seeking and implementing God's purpose, vision, and plan for Mount Zion Baptist Church. The church has a great history, but we are focused on a glorious future as we strive to worship and serve the Lord, Jesus Christ and carry out His divine plan and purpose for the church.
